“I took my mother to see Sonorad Ultrasound with a frozen right shoulder which she has had for over 3 years. After the superb and professional consultation explaining the process of how this frozen shoulder may have happened, Doctor Mahmood went through the process for rectifying/fixing her frozen shoulder issue. We have the steroid injection and after 24/48 hours she had gained 25% more movement with in her right shoulder. We would highly recommend Dr Mahmood and his team.”. R S – Frozen shoulder pain

shoulder pain patient

“I had been experiencing some issues with my right shoulder for a while, which intensified after some overactivity. I was advised by a doctor to take painkillers but I wasn't satisfied, so a relative recommended that I go see Dr Mahmood at Sonorad. I enquired on Friday morning and was booked in for a scan to take place the next morning – remarkably quick! Once at the clinic, Dr Mahmood and Nighat were so kind and helpful. Dr Mahmood scanned my entire shoulder area, showed me the results, and talked me through what the trouble was. He also advised on next steps I should take for recovery and emailed the report to me and my GP for further consultation. I am a huge fan of the NHS and am in awe of the work they do, however I unfortunately would not have got this necessary diagnosis as quickly through the NHS. Seeing Dr Mahmood gave me the peace of mind and reassurance needed to start recovering ASAP – and it also helped my GP understand what the problem was a lot quicker. I highly recommend Sonorad Ultrasound! – Vikrant Singh Pal"

Frozen Shoulder FAQs

What Is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder in medical terms is called Adhesive capsulitis. Frozen shoulder is a condition secondary to long-standing shoulder inflammation which causes thickening of the shoulder capsule and ultimately restriction of the shoulder movements. It’s a debilitating condition.

How is Frozen Shoulder Diagnosed?

It is diagnosed clinically. Ultrasound is used to determine the possible cause of adhesive capsulitis and to affirm the diagnosis and guided treatment.

What are the treatments for frozen Shoulder?

Ultrasound-guided intra-articular steroid injections are used as the first line of treatment.

Ultrasound-guided “Hydrodistension/hydro dilatation” is considered the best method of treatment which aims to distend/ dilate the shoulder capsule. During this procedure, the consultant radiologist approaches the exact location to inject fluid admixed with steroids. In our experience, this procedure/treatment yields excellent results. Most of the patients feel immediate relief.

Surgery is the last choice in very resistant cases.

What’s ultrasound-guided Hydrodistension/Hydro dilatation?

It’s a minimally invasive procedure with the best results in most of the cases. The consultant radiologist identifies the exact location with ultrasound guidance. A local anaesthetic is initially given with the intention to make it a pain-free procedure. Local anaesthetic + steroid is instilled into the joint cavity and following this, approximately 20 -30 ml of normal saline/ fluid is injected into the joint cavity to distend the capsule. You may feel a bit compressive and rarely a tingling feeling in your arm. In our experience, most of the patients start benefitting just after the procedure.
This procedure is highly advised to be less invasive and have good results before any surgery is contemplated.
Physiotherapy exercises are recommended for long-lasting results.

Is there any preparation before the Hydrodistension/Hydro dilatation?

No specific precaution. Let your consultant know about the medication you are already taking.

Any post-procedural advice?

It’s advisable not to drive after the procedure. You are advised not to perform heavy physical activity for 2- 3 days. You need to start physio exercises immediately and increase the frequency of these with the passage of time to achieve the very best results.
