Abdominal Ultrasound Scan

Abdominal Ultrasound Scan at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic

Abdominal discomfort, bloating or changes in digestion can be unsettling, especially if you are waiting for test results or do not yet have a clear diagnosis. At Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic, we provide private abdominal ultrasound scans in a calm, professional environment, with the aim of giving you clear information quickly and safely. Our focus is high-quality imaging carried out with genuine care, from your first enquiry through to your results.

What is an Abdominal Ultrasound Scan?

An abdominal diagnostic ultrasound scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create moving pictures of the organs and structures inside your abdomen. Organs such as the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas, bladder, prostate and female pelvic organs (Uterus and ovaries). No radiation is involved. The ultrasound probe is placed gently on your skin and sends sound waves into the body; the echoes are converted into images on a screen in real time.

Clinicians use abdominal ultrasound to look at the solid organs in the upper and lower abdomen, the main blood vessels and any collections of fluid or abnormal lumps. It is commonly requested when patients have ongoing pain, bloating, abnormal blood tests or changes in bowel habit, and it is also used to monitor certain known conditions.

What Can an Abdominal Ultrasound Help to Investigate?

Abdominal ultrasound can help investigate a wide range of symptoms. If you have pain in the upper abdomen, particularly under the ribs, the scan may look for gallstones, gallbladder inflammation, liver problems or issues with the pancreas. Lower abdominal discomfort can prompt a closer examination of the bladder, kidneys and pelvic structures; at the same time, more general pain or bloating might lead the practitioner to look for fluid, enlarged organs or masses.

A GP or specialist may also arrange an abdominal ultrasound if blood tests reveal abnormal liver function, raised inflammatory markers or possible kidney problems. For some people, ultrasound is used to monitor known conditions rather than to make a new diagnosis. This might include simple liver cysts, fatty liver disease, kidney cysts, mild enlargement of the spleen or a previously identified small aortic aneurysm.

Your Abdominal Ultrasound at a glance

A typical abdominal ultrasound appointment at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic lasts around twenty to thirty minutes, including time to discuss your concerns. The scan is carried out in a private room using a hand-held ultrasound probe and a small amount of medical gel on the skin of your abdomen. In many situations, you can book directly without a GP referral, although if a referral is advisable, we will explain this when you enquire. In straightforward cases, you receive a verbal explanation of the findings before you leave, followed by a written summary or report that can be shared with your GP or consultant if needed.

Abdominal Ultrasound Scan FAQs

What is Ultrasound Scan?

Ultrasound imaging is a non-ionising and non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. It is safe and painless. It produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves. Ultrasound imaging is also called sonography. It uses a small probe called a transducer and gel placed directly on the skin. High-frequency sound waves travel from the probe through the gel into the body. The probe collects the sounds that bounce back. A computer uses those sound waves to create an image.

Ultrasound exams do not use radiation (no X-rays). Because ultrasound captures images in real time, it can show the structure and motion of the body’s organs. Thanks to new additions, microflow can detect minor inflammations. Ultrasound images of the musculoskeletal system provide pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves and soft tissues throughout the body.

Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic aims to combine a welcoming, patient-centred approach with standards that reflect UK healthcare expectations. When you attend for an abdominal ultrasound, you are seen in a clean, private environment by clinicians experienced in ultrasound imaging. Time is set aside not only to perform the scan but also to listen to your concerns, answer questions and ensure you feel as comfortable as possible.

Appointments are arranged to keep waiting times down and to make booking straightforward. You can book an appointment at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic online through the clinic’s booking system or by contacting the team directly for advice on the most suitable scan for your symptoms. Wherever possible, scan findings are discussed with you on the same day, so you are not left wondering. When something unexpected is found, staff will explain this sensitively and stress the importance of follow-up with your GP or relevant specialist.

The equipment used at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic is modern and maintained in line with safety standards. The team works within guidance familiar to clinicians across the NHS and private sector, with an emphasis on appropriate, safe imaging and clear communication rather than unnecessary tests or unrealistic claims.

Why might I need an abdominal ultrasound scan?

People are referred for abdominal ultrasound for many different reasons. Common symptoms include ongoing pain in the upper or lower abdomen, discomfort after meals, bloating, a feeling of fullness, unexplained changes in bowel habit, recurrent urinary infections, and blood in the urine or abnormal results on blood tests. Some patients describe a feeling of pressure under the ribs, or intermittent sharp pains on one side that might suggest kidney or gallbladder problems.

Ultrasound is particularly useful in assessing possible gallstones, kidney stones, simple cysts, liver disease and the size and appearance of the major abdominal organs. It cannot, however, detect every possible cause of abdominal symptoms, particularly problems affecting the inner lining of the bowel or stomach, which may need endoscopy or other tests.

Many patients come to us for a private abdominal ultrasound scan to investigate:

  • Persistent or sudden abdominal pain
  • Bloating or discomfort
  • Suspected gallstones or kidney stones
  • Abnormal liver or kidney blood test results
  • Ongoing nausea or changes in bowel habits
  • Liver disease, cysts, tumours, or fluid collections.

What does an abdominal ultrasound scan show?

An abdominal ultrasound scan is a simple, non-invasive imaging test that shows real-time pictures of your internal organs. Using safe sound waves and no radiation, it helps examine your liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, bladder, and major blood vessels. The ultrasound probe (called a transducer) gently glides over your abdomen. It sends sound waves into the body, and the echoes create detailed images on a monitor.

At Sonorad Private Ultrasound Clinic in Slough, our scans are performed by experienced consultant radiologists who also work in top NHS hospitals across the UK. This ensures you receive the same expert care in a faster, more comfortable setting.

Which Areas Can an Abdominal Ultrasound Assess?

During an abdominal ultrasound at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic, the practitioner will usually assess the organs that sit within or just behind the abdominal cavity, tailoring the examination to your symptoms and any clinical information from your GP or specialist.

The liver can be examined for its size and shape, how the tissue appears and whether there are cysts, lumps or signs of fatty change. This is often helpful if blood tests suggest abnormal liver function or if there is concern about alcohol-related liver disease or other liver conditions.

The gallbladder and bile ducts can be checked for gallstones, inflammation or thickening of the gallbladder wall. Many people with pain under the right ribs, pain after fatty meals or episodes of jaundice are investigated with ultrasound because it is very good at showing gallstones and dilated bile ducts.

The pancreas can often be seen, although the view may be limited by bowel gas or body habitus. When visible, it may show signs of inflammation, cysts or mass-like changes that might need further assessment.

The spleen, on the left side of the upper abdomen, can be assessed for enlargement, differences in texture or areas of damage after trauma.

The kidneys and upper urinary tract can be examined for stones, cysts, swelling, scarring and drainage problems. Ultrasound can also show whether there is an obstruction to urine flow that might relate to stones or other narrowing.

The bladder can be assessed when full, looking at the thickness and appearance of its walls, any visible lesions and how well it empties. This can be helpful for people with recurrent urinary infections or difficulties passing urine.

The main abdominal blood vessel, the aorta, can be inspected for widening or bulging, known as an aneurysm. Ultrasound is a recognised way of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm in selected patients.

Depending on the reason for your visit, the clinician at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic may also look at nearby lymph nodes, free fluid within the abdomen and other areas of interest highlighted by your symptoms or referral letter.

What diseases can an abdominal ultrasound detect?

The list is long, but the following are the main areas ultrasound can pick and screen:

Liver Ultrasound:

Ultrasound can diagnose liver lesions such as cancer, cysts and abscesses. It picks up diffuse liver diseases such as fatty liver and checks liver cirrhosis and obstructive causes of jaundice. It not only diagnoses the diseases but is also used in monitoring the treatment of known diseases undergoing treatment. It helps to evaluate and clarify the indeterminate lesions seen on CT. It’s used to see the normal and abnormal blood flow patterns in the liver.

Gall bladder ultrasound:

Ultrasound is considered one of the initial and best modalities to detect gallstones, and gallbladder inflammation helps to differentiate non-cancerous and cancerous lesions. It’s much more commonly used for the gallbladder than any other imaging modality.

Pancreas scanning:

The pancreas is an important upper mid-abdominal organ which produces various hormones, such as insulin, to control the body’s sugar. Ultrasound helps to diagnose pancreatic inflammation, cancers and pancreatic cysts. Occasionally, bowel gases can obscure part of the pancreas, but in such circumstances, it can still pick up large lesions.

Lymph nodes:

The lymphatic system encompasses the whole body and provides a defence against diseases. If lymph nodes become diseased, it will have an adverse effect on combating various diseases. Ultrasound can detect abnormal lymph nodes, which helps in the early detection of the disease and its treatment. It’s one of the basic tools to monitor blood cancers. Ultrasound is used by radiologists as a guide to take samples of the suspected abnormal lymph nodes.

Spleen Ultrasound Scanning:

Ultrasound is an extremely useful tool in identifying splenic cancers, cysts and abscesses. Blood cancers such as lymphoma and leukaemia can have manifestations in the spleen, and ultrasound can detect suspicious lesions. The spleen can get injured during accidents or falls, and blood can accumulate in the spleen or between the capsule and spleen, known as a subcapsular haematoma.

Radiologists use ultrasound as a guide to get samples of the suspicious lesions and drain the splenic abscess and hematomas.

Ultrasound of the kidneys and urinary bladder:

Ultrasound is widely used to see kidney stones, swelling of the urinary tract and possible suspicious lesions and differentiate possible cancers from simple cysts. It helps interventional radiologists in guiding them to take samples of the suspicious lesions and make appropriate referrals. By ultrasound guidance, radiologists can drain the obstructing kidney system and detect kidney injuries and hematomas.

Abdominal Collection:

Ultrasound is used to find abdominal collections and abscesses in a sick patient. It guides the drain of such collections for faster recovery.

Abdominal Wall Lesions and Hernias:

Abdominal, inguinal and femoral hernias are detected and well-differentiated with ultrasound. Ultrasound is widely used to detect abdominal wall lipomas, haematomas and abscesses and their drainage.

Can abdominal ultrasound detect bowel problems?

Bowel gas is a hindrance to seeing within the bowel lumen. Ultrasound is the preferred modality for acute appendicitis in young adults and childbearing age to avoid CT radiation. Small lesions of the bowel are difficult to detect with ultrasound, but new scanners can detect moderate-sized lesions.

Can abdominal ultrasound scans be used for cancer diagnosis?

Abdominal ultrasound can sometimes detect masses or areas of abnormal tissue that might represent cancer, such as a suspicious lesion in the liver, kidney or other solid organs. In other situations, it may show non-specific changes that prompt further tests, or it may appear entirely normal even when symptoms continue. It is more accurate to say that ultrasound can highlight features that need further assessment rather than that it can reliably confirm or exclude cancer on its own.

If a concerning area is seen during your scan at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic, this will be explained to you carefully, and you will be advised to see your GP or specialist promptly.

Is an abdominal ultrasound better than a CT scan?

CT and ultrasound are complementary to each other in disease diagnosis. As ultrasound does not use radiation, it’s considered safer during pregnancy and childbearing age. Ultrasound is superior to CT due to its ready availability and much better soft tissue evaluation in certain diseases. Monitoring treatment response, Liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, Gall bladder and pelvic organs.

How safe is an abdominal ultrasound at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic?

Yes, an abdominal ultrasound scan is regarded as a very safe test. It uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation, so you are not exposed to X-rays during the examination. Ultrasound has been used in routine medical practice for many years, including in pregnancy and in children, with a strong safety record. At Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic, scans are performed by trained clinicians using equipment maintained to recognised standards, and the procedure is kept as brief as is practical while still obtaining the images needed.

You may feel slight pressure from the probe, particularly if an area is already tender, but this is usually mild and short-lived. There is no recovery time after an abdominal ultrasound, and you can normally drive and return to your usual activities straight away.

How do I prepare for an abdominal ultrasound scan?

Preparation for an abdominal ultrasound depends on which organs need to be examined. When you book, the team at Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic will explain exactly what is required for your appointment. In many cases, you may be asked not to eat for several hours beforehand so that the gallbladder and upper abdominal organs can be seen more clearly. For other scans, particularly when the bladder is being assessed, you may be advised to drink water and avoid passing urine until after the scan so the bladder is comfortably full.

If you take regular medication, you should usually continue as normal, but it is important to mention conditions such as diabetes so that fasting instructions can be tailored safely for you. On the day, it is helpful to wear loose-fitting clothing that can be easily lifted or moved away from the abdomen, and to bring a list of your current medicines and any recent test results or clinic letters if you have them. If you are unsure about any aspect of preparation, you can contact the clinic in advance for clarification using the details on the Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic contact page.

What Happens During the abdominal ultrasound scan?

What Happens During the Scan

When you arrive for your appointment, a member of the Sonorad team will confirm your details and check that you are happy to proceed. You will be shown to a private room and usually asked to lie on an examination couch, most often on your back, although you may be asked to roll slightly onto your side so that certain organs can be seen more clearly.

A clear medical gel is applied to the skin over your abdomen. This gel may feel cool at first, but it does not stain clothing. The ultrasound probe is then moved gently over the skin. You may feel light pressure as the clinician presses the probe against your abdomen to obtain the best images, particularly under the ribs, but this should not be painful. At times, you may be asked to take a deep breath and hold it briefly to help bring certain structures into view.

Throughout the scan, images are viewed on a screen, and the practitioner may pause to take measurements or record particular pictures. You are welcome to ask what is being looked at, although there may be moments when the clinician needs to concentrate quietly on obtaining accurate images. The whole procedure is usually completed within a short time, after which the gel is wiped away, and you can get dressed in privacy.

After Your Scan and Receiving Your Results

Once the scan is complete, your practitioner will usually talk through the main findings with you there and then. If the scan appears normal, this will be explained clearly. If any changes are seen that may require further assessment or discussion with your GP, this will be outlined in a straightforward, practical way. A written summary or formal report is prepared, and you will be told how and when this will be available to you.

In many cases, Sonorad Ultrasound Clinic can provide a copy of the report for you to take away, and with your consent, it can also be sent to your GP or consultant so that it forms part of your ongoing medical record. If the scan raises urgent concerns or if there is anything that might require prompt assessment through NHS services, you will be advised clearly about this and supported to seek the right help.

It is important to remember that ultrasound has limitations. Sometimes an area may not be seen clearly enough, or the findings may be non-specific. In these situations, you may be advised that other tests such as CT, MRI or endoscopy are worth considering, and your GP can arrange these if appropriate.

How long does an abdominal ultrasound scan take?

The duration of the scan can vary, but it typically lasts around 30 minutes. However, it may take longer if a more detailed evaluation is required.

Can you drink water before an abdominal ultrasound scan?

In upper abdominal scanning, you have to fast for at least 6 hours and have no restrictions on drinking water. Water in the stomach provides a good window to evaluate the pancreas. A full bladder is better for the urinary bladder and ureteric stones.

A full bladder provides a good window for the female uterine/ovarian and prostate evaluation. For the water system, prostate and female pelvic scan, please start drinking at least 2-3 glasses of water before your scan appointment.

Will the radiologist explain if something is wrong during my scan?

Yes. During your abdominal ultrasound appointment here at Sonorad, a highly experienced consultant radiologist will review your scan in real time. In most cases, they’ll discuss the results with you there and then, during your appointment.

If anything unusual is found or if further detail is needed, they may recommend a follow-up scan, additional testing, or refer you to a relevant specialist. Our priority is to give you fast, accurate answers and peace of mind, all while maintaining the highest standard of private healthcare.

At Sonorad, all scans are performed and reviewed by NHS-trusted consultant radiologists who also practise at top hospitals across the UK. You can be confident you’re in expert hands.
