Hyaluronic Acid Injections FAQs

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Our bodies naturally contain hyaluronic acid (HA), which is mostly found in connective tissues like cartilage, skin, and joints.

Hyaluronic acid serves an essential purpose in the joints by acting as a lubricant, a shock absorber, and support for cartilage health. The level and/or the quality of hyaluronic acid in our joints may alter as we get older or sustain joint injuries, resulting in stiffness, swelling, pain, and restricted mobility.

The lubricating properties of hyaluronic acid enhance gliding and reduce sticking in the tendon fibres. Additionally, hyaluronic acid reduces inflammatory mediators and blocks pain receptors.

How Is Hyaluronic Acid used for arthritic pain?

Hyaluronic acid injections are useful for treating joint pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis. At Sonorad, these injections are only administered by radiology consultants under strict aseptic conditions. First, an ultrasound of the area is done to locate the best position for the injection. A local anaesthetic is applied to the treatment area to make the procedure more comfortable. Next, joint fluid or swelling gets aspirated (also known as drawn) under ultrasound guidance, and the appropriate hyaluronic acid is then injected directly into the joint. This can enhance cartilage health, lessen inflammation, and increase joint lubrication.

Osteoarthritis is a disorder in which cartilage in the joints breaks down because of ageing, sports injuries, accidents, or high-impact activities. Hyaluronic Acid Injections are a method commonly used to treat osteoarthritis. It can also be administered topically to the skin or taken as an oral supplement along with injections.

What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid injection for joint pain??

There are several benefits of hyaluronic acid (HA) injections as a treatment for joint pain. Injections of HA slow down the rate of joint wear and tear brought on by ageing, daily activities, trauma, and high-impact activities.

Repeated HA injections can continue to relieve joint pain and stiffness. Compared to corticosteroid (cortisone/steroid) injections, HA does not result in progressive deterioration of effect over time. Therefore, HA injections are safe to receive regularly if they are beneficial to you.

Other benefits from HA Injections include:

Non-surgical: HA injections may be an option for individuals who want to delay surgery or who aren’t suitable candidates for it.

Minimal side effects: The adverse effects of HA injections are usually minimal and temporary, with the most common symptoms being brief discomfort, oedema, stiffness, and redness at the injection site.

Long-lasting comfort: HA injections are made to relieve joint pain and stiffness. After a single injection, some individuals could experience relief for up to 6 to 9 months.

Can enhance joint performance: Additionally, HA injections can enhance joint functionality, enabling patients to go about their everyday lives with less pain and discomfort. It enables you to return to your interests, jobs, and leisure pursuits.

Which hyaluronic acid injections are used at Sonorad?

We use Ostenil (mini or plus) or Durolane injections.

Ostenil Plus injection is used in most patients with osteoarthritis of large joints (Knee and Hip etc). Ostenil Plus is a higher concentration of Hyaluronic acid plus mannitol for longer stability and effects which reduces the number of injections to one treatment cycle.

Ostenil mini is used for small joints as in hands or feet.

Durolane Injections are considered for longer effects but are more expensive. Some studies have shown almost equal benefits.

How many injections do I need? Or can I have?

Some people might require a series of three injections, while others might just require one. There is no restriction on the number of hyaluronic acids you can receive. Repeated HA injections can continue to relieve joint pain and stiffness. Compared to corticosteroid (cortisone/steroid) injections, HA does not result in progressive deterioration over time. HA injections are safe to receive regularly as they are a natural component of synovial fluid. In certain cases, HA injections don’t relieve symptoms.

Is relief from hyaluronic acid injections long-lasting for arthritis joints?

In general, the length of time that hyaluronic acid injections for arthritis joint pain provide pain relief can vary based on several factors, including the type of injection used, the severity of arthritis, and the person’s response to the treatment. Your healthcare professional can help you decide if this treatment is right for you by considering its possible advantages and disadvantages.

Do the Hyaluronic Acid Injections have any side effects?

As with any other medical treatment, side effects are important to be aware of.  Most adverse effects of HA injections are rare, mild, and temporary.

Pain, swelling, redness, and warmth at the injection site are common side effects of HA injections. After the injection, these side effects often disappear within a few days.

Allergic reactions, which may lead to itchiness, rash, or breathing difficulties, are among the less common side effects. While they are extremely rare, these responses can be dangerous and need urgent medical care. If you experience any, either dial 999 or go to A and E.

In some circumstances, HA injections might also result in a temporary increase in pain or joint stiffness. Usually, this fades quickly, and things get better within a few days.

Can I get a hyaluronic acid injection without a referral?

A referral from your family physician/GP, orthopaedic surgeon, rheumatologist, physiotherapist or chiropractor is desirable though not necessary.

If you do not have a referral, please book a consultation for a steroid injection assessment, where the consultant will discuss with you the therapeutic outcome/pain management options.

What drugs should not be taken with Hyaluronic Acid Injections?

Careful consideration is needed in patients on blood thinners. Although intra-articular injections should not alter systemic sugar levels, we advise patients with diabetes to continue monitoring their blood sugar levels after the injection. Please discuss this with your consultant radiologist or referring physician.

What is an alternative to Hyaluronic Acid Injection?

An alternative is steroid Injections, commonly known as corticosteroid injections are used to reduce pain and the inflammation of the tendons, tendon sheaths, joint pain, arthritis and during the treatment of ganglion cysts. These are only administered by qualified and trained healthcare professionals. Ultrasound provides the best guidance to instil the injection at the target point.

Speaking with our team is the best way to pick the right solution for you, results can last longer with Hyaluronic Acid Injection but might not offer immediate relief.
