What is a Testicular Scan?

A scrotal ultrasound scan is a painless investigation that produces an image of the inside of your testicle using high-frequency sound waves. It is the imaging modality of choice for determining if a mass is cancerous (malignant) or benign (benign).

Your specialist will be able to establish the location and size of the abnormalities in your testicle through a scrotal ultrasound. It will also reveal whether the lump is in the testicle or separate within the scrotum, and whether it is solid or fluid-filled. A fluid-filled mass or accumulation around the testis is typically not dangerous. A more substantial lump could indicate that the growth is malignant.

Testicular Scan FAQs

What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound imaging is a non-ionising and non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. It is safe and painless. It produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves. Ultrasound imaging is also called sonography. It uses a small probe called a transducer and gel placed directly on the skin. High-frequency sound waves travel from the probe through the gel into the body. The probe collects the sounds that bounce back. A computer uses those sound waves to create an image. Ultrasound exams do not use radiation (No x-rays). Because ultrasound captures images in real-time, it can show the structure and motion of the body organs. Thanks to new additions as microflow can detect minor inflammations. Ultrasound images of the musculoskeletal system provide pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves and soft tissues throughout the body.

What to expect during a testicular ultrasound?
  • Consultant radiologists evaluate the testicular size and its parenchymal texture. Ultrasound is the primary modality of choice to find and differentiate benign cyst from a suspicious lesion.
  • Ultrasounds evaluate varicoceles ( Dilated vessels), and their size and characterise whether these need urological referral or treatment. This is sometimes included for the infertility workup.
  • Hydrocele – a condition in which abnormal fluid accumulates in the scrotal sac and scrotum swells up.
  • Ultrasound is used in determining infection/ inflammation of the epididymis commonly known as ependymitis.
  • Ultrasound is used to find the Un descendant testicles ( Trapped in the inguinal canal or in the abdomen) during or after the birth. It’s helpful to the surgeons for a roadmap for surgery if necessary
  • Testicular Torsion- An emergency situation and ultrasound have the capability to determine the condition for a timely salvage procedure..
How do you prepare for a testicular scan?

No specific preparation is needed for the scan. No dietary restrictions. Radiologist may put some soft pad under the testicles for better visualisation and ultrasound probe contact.

Do you need to shave for a testicular ultrasound?
