What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound imaging is a non-ionising and non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. It is safe and painless. It produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves. Ultrasound imaging is also called sonography. It uses a small probe called a transducer and gel placed directly on the skin. High-frequency sound waves travel from the probe through the gel into the body. The probe collects the sounds that bounce back. A computer uses those sound waves to create an image. Ultrasound exams do not use radiation (No x-rays). Because ultrasound captures images in real-time, it can show the structure and motion of the body organs. Thanks to new additions microflow can detect minor inflammations. Ultrasound images of the musculoskeletal system provide pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves and soft tissues throughout the body.

What to Expect During the Prostate Ultrasound?
During the ultrasound:
- By transabdominal approach, you lie on your back and an examination performed through the abdomen and a full bladder provides a good window to evaluate the prostate.
- With the transrectal (TRUS) approach, you’ll be asked to lie on your side. A small, lubricated probe is gently inserted into the rectum.
- The probe emits sound waves that create images of the prostate.
- The procedure typically lasts about 15 minutes and is generally well-tolerated.

Preparing for Your Prostate Ultrasound
Preparation may include:
- Avoiding blood thinners for 7 to 10 days prior, if a biopsy is planned
- Taking prescribed antibiotics before the procedure
- Using an enema a few hours before the ultrasound to clear the bowel
Is the Prostate Ultrasound procedure painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during a prostate ultrasound. Our skilled radiologists strive to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
How long does the prostate ultrasound scan take?
The ultrasound itself usually takes about 15 minutes. Including preparation and post-procedure discussions, you can expect to be at the clinic for approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
